And they saw that it was good

For above the clouds as well, rain brings cold
The vehement sun scorches all living and dead
The strong wind blows all the seeds far away
And no man is safe from the fury of thunder
For over these islands rages the eternal war of storm

- The book of Storm

In the age before man, and even the Furies, there was only Storm. Storm, the essence of the world, was the creator of everything known in the universe. It was an empty world, however, with no stars, land or anything else. For Her entertainment and need for company, She created the Furies, a band of few dozen lovely ladies. Storm, not wanting to be a tyrant over Her new creations, gave each Fury a part of Her essence in exchange of their services; there were Fire, Starlight, Wind and numerous others.

After the creation of Her servants and friends, Storm smiled upon the world and crafted her finest creation:  Silence. It was a beautiful work of art, so smooth and charming that no Fury or man has been able to surpass its excellence. Once the Silence was ready, stringed to the world and set into its darkness, Storm looked at Her work, and saw that it was good. She was very pleased, and for the second time she smiled upon the world and the Furies. So pleased she was that she melted Herself with the world that had now become the Storm Herself. As the world was now one with Her, the last wish that was spoken on Her own lips was that the Furies would cherish the Silence with caressing, gentle hands.

Such was the world:  Storm, the essence of the world and former ruler of the universe, the Silence and the Furies all dancing in the great void of darkness. There was, however, one who was not pleased with her role. She was the Fury of Earth. She was envious of the beauty of the other Furies, although she herself had never seen her own face. She grew so bitter and envious that eventually She began teasing the others. The teasing started with tricks, which grew in time more and more serious, finally even cracking parts off the Silence, but she didn’t stop until the one day when Fire confronted her. The Fury of Fire had grown impatient and tired of Earth’s lack of obedience; in her anger and fury, she struck Earth to death, and she saw that it was good. Earth’s body became all the land there is in the world.

Curiously wondering this new feeling of her, Fire was maddened by power and greed. She went and slew the fury of Sky, whose body became the great sky that covered the whole world. Killing Starlight, whose bones were scattered to the firmament and became the shining stars, Fire eventually cut the Silence and crushed everything that was left of it, and saw that it was good.

The crushing of the Silence changed the order of world forever – the Furies were plunged into a war of greed, madness and power. The fury of Thunder stuck Fire down and the body cleansed all the land in a mighty ablaze, and finding the pleasure of killing, Thunder proceeded to slay Moon and Cloud. The other Furies joined the fray, some because they wanted the Silence back, some because they wanted power and some only because they enjoyed bloodshed. The war between the Furies continued long and everything in the world was shattered, crushed and deformed. There seemed to be no end at all for all the destruction, until that final day when man was created.

Only five Furies were left on that day. Thunder, Wind, Rain and Sun were the most violent and sadistic of the lot. Life still desperately wanted the Silence back. The battle was fierce from the dawn already, and Life’s now weak body was crushed to the Earth’s crust. As Her one last desperate act, She stripped all remaining Furies of their mortal bodies. The fight was about to continue among the remaining four one way or another, but then they saw something happening. As their bodies had left their minds, the world had become complete. This change even awoke Storm, who now was one with the world, and indeed, the whole world shook.

She was, however, not the same Storm that had merged with the world. All the dead Furies that had once been Her had changed Her; She was now furious and sadistic, lusting for death that pleased her. Thunder, Wind, Rain and Sun all rejoiced the second coming of their creator Storm and wanted to please Her. Seeing how they were the last four left, they looked upon the world that was now complete. Life’s body was still unchanged:  they took and hurled it against the earth for the second time and buried the splinters. From the splinters underground they crafted a new species. They had will and mind, as lustful as the ones of their creators, but bodies so weak and fragile that they were wholly dependent on the Furies. They were the first men. So had ended the war between the furies and the world as we know it had born.

Storm’s last gifts for the world were the five thrones, one for each Fury. The last throne, The Throne of Storm, was set on the centre of the world. Possession would be given for the man that pleased his Fury the most, but the only eligible man to sit himself on the throne shall be the man that gained Storm’s smile.

The Furies then gave the mankind the strongest armour ever, the hate, as well as the greatest weapon ever, the lust for violence, and they saw that it was good.

The fate of man

Into doom the Furies had plunged him.
- The book of Storm

As the war between the furies had ended, a new war between the men had begun. As Rain watered the seeds, She also washed them away. As Sun gave warmth, She also burnt everything. As Wind fertilized the plants, She also blew the seeds away. As Thunder kept order, She also slew all opposing Her.

Due to the merciless nature of the Furies, the humans had no other choice but to please their masters to be able to live. Eventually this became natural for them and they learned to enjoy their sacrificing. The world, an endless sky with shattered islands here and there, is completely unsuitable habitat for humans. People need in almost all things help from their Furies; food, transportation and even their own mindless war – it is the perfect battleground. The only noteworthy, quite easily available natural resource was and is The Wine of Anger, which is either used for pleasure or sacrifice. That alone is a good example of the sadistic minds of the Furies.

It is now the year 19,368. For nineteen thousand years, the humans have slain each other to please both themselves and the Furies. There has been slavery and oppression, blood and tears, suffering and pain. The Queendom of Nerin, the followers of Sun, currently holds the Throne of Storm and has done so for the last few hundred years, but no man has ever sat on it. Through the course of those years, there has been mostly peace – but the Furies aren’t satisfied in this and there is soon to be a change.

The longest man-made sky bridge begins in the centre of world and ends in Nerin. Lately, this bridge has suffered enormous damage and Nerin has accused Zephyr, the followers of Wind. Zephyr, enraged of these accusations, but realising that an open war with Sun would be risky, have decided to appease Nerin with a gift.

The present on its way to Nerin and the recently freed people of Thunder picking fights with the followers of Rain, it is sure that the political situation will change soon – but whatever happens, more blood is sure to be shed and ultimately the fate of man is not in his own hands, but in the strings of the sadistic Furies.
The first two chapters of the story I blabbered in a journal entry some time ago. The rest will probably be written in Finnish, because I'm afraid the story will extend to the lenght of a short novel.

I like the idea very much. And also the mythology and the biblical quotes hidden there are great!
Well-written I’m looking forward to any continuation... :hungry:
